Kew Community Festival 2011
The Kew Festival offers an exciting array of events held over 10 festive days from Friday 18 March to Sunday 27 March 2011.
The Kew Community Festival showcases local community groups and businesses through fun entertainment and activities for all ages and interests and most events are free.
The Yarra Trams Street Parade as part of the Family Fun Day begins Saturday 19th at 11:30am, meeting at Kew Primary in Pakington Street. It showcases floats, clowns, marching bands and numerous community groups marching up High Street and along Cotham Road to Petrie Square, and on to Alexandra Gardens in Kew where the fun continues with a food, craft and information market, rides and free entertainment until 4:30pm.
Plans are in place for a closing concert and fireworks on Saturday 27th March from 6:30pm to 9:00pm celebrating the magnificent setting at Hays Paddock. Bring a picnic and enjoy the entertainment from singers and performers. Concluding with a spectacular fireworks display. Refreshments available.

From the assembly points in Pakington Street and Holy Trinity Church, along High Street to the QPO, then up Cotham Road to Civic Drive/Petrie Square and on to Alexandra Gardens for a "Welcome to Country" ceremony with guest didjeridu player Waitarie from the PIlbara. The fun continues at the Family Fun Day with stalls and entertainment. Experience the sights and sounds of this vibrant community street parade featuring local schools, kindergartens, brass bands, entertainers, scouts and other local organisations.

Guest speaker will be Helen MacDonald, author of "Human Remains: Episodes in Human Dissection" and "Possessing the Dead: the Artful Science of Anatomy". Helen is an award-winning historian and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne.
Corpses were valuable commodities during the nineteenth century. Most people preferred to go to their graves intact, so hardly anyone donated their bodies to medical schools for students to dissect. Anatomists therefore set about acquiring them in unlawful and unethical ways. This talk with explore the dark history of how people's bodies were turned into ‘subjects for dissection’, or what grave-robbers called ‘things for the surgeons’.
